Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment Support
Environmental Chemical Corporation for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District
Location: Camp Edwards, Massachusetts Military Reservation
OVERVIEW

- HHRAs and ERAs of propellant, explosive, and pyrotechnic (PEP) compounds in soil and groundwater in support of MMR’s Impact Area Groundwater Study Program
- Coordinated with multiple stakeholders including the USACE, USAF (AFCEE), USEPA, National Guard, MADEP.
DESCRIPTION

Avatar has performed multiple human health and ecological risk assessments for soil and groundwater contaminated with propellant, explosive, and pyrotechnic compounds (e.g., perchlorate and RDX) in support of multiple Remedial Investigations being conducted by the Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC) for the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program. The assessments are being performed in accordance with EPA and Massachusetts Contingency Plan risk assessment guidance.
The purpose of these evaluations is to determine if the PEP and other site-related compounds present in the soil and groundwater from the historic military training uses at Camp Edwards would result in an unacceptable risk to humans and ecological receptors. In order to determine the total risks to individuals from exposure to both soil and groundwater at a specific range, cumulative risk assessments based on soil and groundwater exposure have been developed.
